Managing, preserving and displaying community archives

Friday, 10 November, 2017 (All day)

A one-day course aimed at individuals, groups and organisations seeking guidance and support on how to manage and exploit archive collections. There are many voluntary groups, small museums, and other organisations that hold archive collections, but do not have the resources to employ a professional archivist. This course provides those involved in the management and use of these collections with practical advice on how to preserve and make best use of them.

Course attendees will:

  • Gain practical skills in archival document handling and preservation of archive collections.
  • Understand the importance of cataloguing procedures and processes; be equipped with the skills to implement basic cataloguing on own collections
  • Increase knowledge of funding/ fundraising opportunities available for archives
  • Have a greater understanding of best practice when exhibiting archive collections

The course will be delivered by staff from University of Leicester Special Collections. Further details are available here: and places can be booked for £75 or only £50 for students, including lunch, refreshments and course materials.
